Need For Speed CARBON

Review:
After Need for Speed Underground outsold all other games in 2004, the largest independent game publisher in the world adroitly kept the series coming without a hitch. Last year's Most Wanted shipped at Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch and introduced a creative take on story-telling by using filtered customized FMV to give the familiar racer a fresh presentation. The police were back with a ferocious vengeance. And it offered a particularly North-West vibe to it.

This year's version, Need for Speed Carbon, which refers to Carbon Canyon where racers duel for territory in the city below, is a minor shake-up for the series, shifting in new features, shifting out others, while continuing the FMV-heavy story-telling from Most Wanted. Carbon, in other words, is a decent update to last year's game with improved graphics, excellent Autosculpt customization, a different progression system, and an all-around solid take on the game. It's not revolutionary, it's not brilliant, but it's good, deep racing.

Need For Speed Under-Cover

Review:
It’s almost the end of another year and each year seems to bring another version of the racing franchise Need For Speed. This new one sees you infiltrating a gang of street racers in order to uncover some organised crime and drug syndicates. Just how racing against them somehow leads to arrests isn’t quite clear. Still, it’s an excuse to race around the city streets and avoid the cops. Even though you’re on their side they don’t know that so there’s another excuse for some high-speed racing and a high probability of losing your no claims bonus.

The game claims to be in an open world format but that’s not really the case. After an initial race from the cops at the start of the game, you’re free to race around the city. We’ll, I say race but there’s no-one actually competing against you and unless the cops find you and start to chase, there’s absolutely no goals to find and no races to stumble across. To get into a race you either hit up on the d-pad to get a map of the city with races available, or hit down to go the nearest race. You’re then faced with a loading screen before the race begins. Unfortunately, even in the races the open world isn’t used. You’re sent down a linear path with a few varied routes but nothing that feels free. Compared to Burnout Paradise this is a huge disappointment.

This being Need For Speed, it isn’t just a case of getting from A to B. Some races are straightforward but there’s also Highway Battle where you must leave a rival in your dust and stay ahead for a certain amount of time or reach a set distance. And of course there are police chases where you can smash through structures to leave carnage for them to crash into.

My other problem with the game is how easy it is. Even if your car isn’t as good as everyone else’s, it’s easy to steam past them and come in first. You then get driver points which up your stats and eventually lead to you buying bigger and more powerful cars. Also, on the PS3 at least, the framerate is appalling. Even playing offline, it plays with the type of lag you’d experience playing online with a bad connection. At high speed, it’s so bad it can make you crash and ejects you completely form the racing experience.

Because I played the Need For Speed Undercover PC version, I’m giving marks for the PC release only. Unfortunately, Need for Speed Undercover fails to deliver on everything it promises and the terrible framerate means it’s effectively broken so it gets a very bad 3 out of 10.

Falcon 4.0 Allied Force

Description:
Just over five years ago, a military flight simulation took the PC games industry by storm. Falcon 4.0 was a game like no other and led to a following like no other. Years of development produced an F-16 simulator with legendary features such as a truly dynamic campaign engine, unrivalled depth of avionics and remarkable levels of artificial intelligence.

Quite simply, Falcon 4.0 was the most important game of its type in a generation because it made gameplay intoxicating.

This summer, Lead Pursuit LLC, in association Graphsim Entertainment Inc., brings the spirit of Falcon 4.0 back to life with a totally updated simulator for 2005. Falcon 4.0: Allied Force pushes the boundaries once again for today's demanding gaming enthusiast.

Features include:

Revamped graphics engine
Reworked multiplayer engine
Highly advanced artificial intelligence
Reworked dynamic campaign engine
Brand new theater of operations
New high resolution models and cockpits
Highly detailed terrain and airbases
Intuitive User Interface

The graphics engine supports real-time terrain lighting, dynamically-shaded 3D volumetric clouds and alpha-blended scattered clouds. Fog is also implemented and combined with new high resolution textures on models and the terrain, the visuals are tremendously improved. Highly detailed and clickable cockpits for three different F-16 aircraft are included: the Block 50/52, 40/42 and MLU variants.

The multiplayer engine features a new, problem-free connection method with support for a centralized, server-system style of play for internet and Local Area Network (LAN) games. Performance and reliability have been greatly improved for both custom made missions and campaign flights.

Perhaps the most important feature of Falcon 4.0: Allied Force is the Dynamic Campaign Engine (DCE). This is the war simulator where any event happening in any part of the theater of combat affects the war's direction throughout the theater. How you perform in your mission directly, and proportionately, determines what happens elsewhere. This is true for the tens of thousands of computer controlled entities in the game. It means that the player really feels part of a living war environment, part of something that is evolving around them in real time.

Some of the greatest changes have been to improve the interaction of computer controlled aircraft and the hundreds of ground entities in Falcon 4.0: Allied Force. Thousands of hours of work has led to remarkable improvements in artificial intelligence. During missions, computer-controlled aircraft will perform with precision. The role of the Forward Air Controller (FAC) is now implemented, allowing the player to co-operate with other flight aircraft when carrying out ground attacks. Brand new Air Traffic Control intelligently manages the flights in and out of bases.

The F-16's electronic systems simulated in Falcon 4.0: Allied Force, including the avionics, are the most realistic for the home personal computer. Numerous modes and sub-modes in air-to-air and air-to-ground radar are accurately implemented to immerse the player in the feel of operating a modern combat aircraft. Identify and lock up targets just as they do in the real jet: feel the gut-wrenching adrenaline flow when the defensive electronic systems indicate a surface to air missile launch against your aircraft.

The new theater of operations is the Balkans. There are three time periods stretching from the mid-1990s to 2010, featuring appropriate aircraft, squadrons and units. Each theater period has three campaigns, making nine in total for the Balkans. Falcon 4.0: Allied Force also features a heavily revised Korean theater and associated campaigns.

Our most important feature is stability. At Lead Pursuit, it's the cornerstone of everything we do. Any new development or enhancement of the product has been extensively tested through classic play and with new dedicated, custom-made software running the equivalent of many thousands of hours of the simulation. Lead Pursuit is proud of the level of stability achieved in Falcon 4.0: Allied Force.

Soldier of Fortune-Double Helix

Review:

This is an action game -- a straight up first person shooter. Anyone can then see the problem: this type of title can become redundant. Recognizing this, Raven attempted to solve the problem by implementing two fundamentally different play styles to augment the straight running and gunning. In come stealth and on-rails shooting. The latter is for the most part done well. Naturally the vast exteriors scrolling by at blinding speeds aren't going to look nearly as good as the articulated buildings and bases of SoF II, but they run fast enough and are scripted well enough to be entertaining. Later on into the game some pretty exciting rides occur, delivering on exactly what they were designed to do: break up play and add diversity.

The problem is with the "Stealth" missions. Like Elite Force and Red Faction, they are poorly developed afterthoughts that actually hamper play and frustrate more than please. I detest instant failures and trial and error. I absolutely abhor that kind of copout gameplay, and Soldier of Fortune II has some of it, enough anyway to displease me and dissuade those with tempers and egos. See, me and you, we're real gamers. When we see a bunch of difficulty settings, we skip right over the first two (sissy and pansy, respectively) and pick one from the harder settings (normal to us is hard for everyone else, and then there's our, "I have no life and will play until my eyes bleed," which of course equates to "don't even try it" for everyone else). But playing like we do means contending with limited saves, and in trial and error situations, this thoroughly sucks.

FrontLines fuel of War

Review:

It is most wanted action game.

Frontlines: Fuel of War takes the franchise and moves it into the first-person shooter genre. Think Battlefield on the 360 and you’re close to what you have when you put this game into the beige box and listen to it sound like it’s about to take off. Of course, there’s a reason there’s more than a nod to Battlefield as the guys from DICE who made that, made this too.

The story’s told through the eyes of a reporter and as a soldier in the Western Coalition you’re fighting over the world’s most valuable commodity - fuel. Tell me about it, petrol’s 108p at my BP garage down the road. The action’s set in the now familiar Middle East as you battle the Red Star Coalition on foot, in vehicles and even in the skies.

Single player last about 6-8 hours but unfortunately, like previous battlefield games, it still feels like you’re playing through a series of bot matches in a faux-online mode disguised as a coherent single player campaign. It’s batter than Battlefield single player, but it still doesn’t quite provide that cinematic feel compared with Call of Duty 4 and Ghost Recon.

Of course, why you really want this game is for the frontlines: fuel of war online setup multiplayer mode where up to 50 people can join the same server and fight to capture control points, ultimately pushing their front line forward and pinning back the enemy.

You can select different soldier classes like assault, heavy assault, anti-armour and snipers, and sub-classes too with three levels that can be earned as you play well. You can use EMPs to knock out vehicles or call in air strikes and this, like the perks in Call of Duty 4, gives you an incentive to keep playing.

The remote-control drones are also a lot of fun. Just fire them from safety and fly them into enemy territory and flick a switch to make it explode!

Looks-wise it’s all a bit grey and brown but this is understandable simply due to the amount of stuff going on at once.

If this came out a year ago I would have been blown away but unfortunately, it just lacks that certain something to make it great - and if you want this for the PC, stick with, or get hold of Battlefield 2 as it’s a far more fun multiplayer experience.

X-Men Origins Wolverine

Review:

Oh, videogames based on movies based on comic books. To the casual consumer, you're a "must buy" because the movie was awesome, so clearly the game will be even better. To the seasoned gamer, you're a title with more potential for a train wreck than Miley Cyrus at 18. When I first heard that X-Men Origins: Wolverine -- Uncaged Edition would be storming the streets alongside the Hugh Jackman talkie, my eyes involuntarily rolled and a sigh escaped my lips. Would this be another botched gaming opportunity for one of comic books' greatest heroes?

The answer is a definitive "no," accented by an adamantium claw to the face. X-Men Origins: Wolverine -- Uncaged Edition is some of the most violent fun I've had in a long, long time. It's far from perfect, but it's going to be a bloody blast for Wolvie fans.

In this game, you're going to behead bad guys, tear people in half with your claws, hack off arms at the shoulders, gut soldiers and shove a man's head into the moving blades of a helicopter. For fans who have scoffed at the number of slices it has taken to drop a bad guy in previous Wolverine games, this is the holy grail. What makes all of these moves impressive is the fact that you can do them pretty much at any time. Sure, there are Rage moves such as a claw spin and temporary damage boost, but you could go the whole game, not use those garnishes and still get the same amount of blood and destruction.

Thief III : The Deadly Shadow

Review:

In the years since Looking Glass created the stealth genre, it's gravitated more towards action, with Splinter Cell, Hitman, and Tenchu always leaving the option, however small, for a "guns blazing" scenario. Deadly Shadows, however, is not stealth action. The pace is gradual--so gradual, in fact, that if I hadn't been reviewing this game, I probably would have given up after a few sessions. I'm glad I stuck with it, though. The goodness creeps up on you. It takes a while for Deadly Shadows to get going, but once it does, it will grip you.

Fifa 2009

Review:

Many of the improvements in FIFA 09 will be familiar to those who dabbled in this summer's take on the European Championships, and here they nestle well with a package that's as deep as any football fan could possibly hope for and that constantly glistens with an overwhelming amount of polish. FIFA's huge cast of footballers have been imbued with an added physicality that's apparent upon working your way through your first match, with collisions between two players now resulting in a series of bespoke and realistic animations. Players running into space will call for the ball, while defenders will raise their arms to alert the linesmen of an offside attacker.

It all adds to an engine that could already proudly claim to be the most realistic depiction of football to date, with FIFA 09 taking it to the next level. Matches play out with a slow and measured pace that rewards the patient and wily, and the best way to create goal-scoring chances is to slowly build up attacks, exploiting space, fiercely protecting possession and employing the right mix of brute force and delicate finesse. With player's attributes now more pronounced it's worth familiarising yourself with your team and capitalising on the stronger members, while FIFA's unique trick system returns and an enhanced vocabulary of moves -- executed with a series of inputs on the right stick -- gives more skilful players another route of attack. It all adds up to one of the most faithful facsimiles of the beautiful game yet seen.
